1847 Rogers Brothers silverware - a summary of it's history

The Rogers Bros. silver stamp mark can trace its beginning to the 1820's. The brothers produced silverplate tableware and hollowware. One of their more popular pattern designs was the 1847 Rogers Bros. flatware. The silver mark Rogers Bros. was first used in the year 1847. In 1898, they became part of the International Silver Company. 1847 Rogers Bros Silver Plate dinnerware is still being produced today.

In 1847, Rogers Brothers introduced a line of electroplated silver pieces. The system for creating a resilient, plated flatware took many years of research. Rogers Brothers promoted their first pattern line with the marketing phrase: "fancy plated flatware."

Meriden Britannia and Rogers Bros., decided that it might be advantageous to organize a cartel of silverware producers and to share manufacturing methods. In 1898, this new corporation emerged as a reality with the merging of 14 silver companies into one corporate entity. The most important of those were Holmes and Edwards, Meriden Britannia, and Rogers Bros. Success for all three silverware manufactures followed the 1898 incorporation play as these brand names are well recognized in the silverware market today.

However, the new company failed to produce any record breaking flatware sales. It was not until International Silver launched the Joan of Arc design line that sales growth improved. In 1940, International Silver saw a spike in sales growth with the release of the Prelude silverware design line.

The International Silver brand continues to be recognized as a designer of quality silverware lines and patterns. More changes occured for International Silver in 1968 when their operations were absorbed by the Insilco Holding Company. During 1976, the Oneida company bought the silverplate division of International Silver. At that time International Silver also terminated its manufacturing of its sterling silver lines. Katy Industries saw an opportunity during the mid-80's and won a bid to buy International Silver and consolidate the operations with Wallace Silversmiths. Later, Syratech Corporation acquired Katy Industries flatware divisions and established the International Silver and Wallace brands as distince entities.

At this time, Syratech retains ownership of the International Silver and Wallace brand names and and silverware production lines.
